Back to National Planning Framework 2 - Action Programme| Action | Unlock the potential for the development of marine renewable resources (wave and tidal power) in the Pentland Firth. |
NPF2 Paragraph Reference | 58, 185, 215, 219, 238, Map 9 |
Contribution to NPF Strategy | - Supports sustainable growth in the rural economy.
- Promotes development which helps to reduce Scotland's carbon footprint and facilitates adaptation to climate change.
- Realises the potential of Scotland's renewable energy resources and facilitates the generation of power form heat from clean, low carbon sources.

| Milestones | Pre 2012 - Co-ordinated action to harness the huge renewal energy potential of the Pentland Firth through incorporation of Pentland Firth Tidal Energy Projects in the preparation of development plans and associated action programmes, partners' plans and programmes and development management decisions. Consider the need for environmental assessment, appropriate assessment and detailed scheme level mitigation at plan or project level, linking with ongoing initiatives to explore and assess emerging marine spatial plans. |

| Progress | March 21, 2011 - The redevelopment of Scrabster Harbour received a funding injection of £2.2 million from the Scottish Government to help complete a funding package of £20 million. The work will upgrade port facilities at the port for existing users, including the fisheries and freight industries, and exploiting the potential from the emerging marine energy sector. March 2010 - Scottish Government published the draft report on the Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters Marine Spatial Plan Framework and Regional Locational Guidance for Marine Energy. It is forming the basis of discussion with key stakeholders. An event is planned in the summer of 2010 to begin to study how the built environment of Caithness and Sutherland can best support to the development of marine renewables resources in the Pentland Firth. |
