Action

Deliver sports facilities and infrastructure required for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Contribution to NPF Strategy

  • Supports the development of Scotland's cities as key drivers of the economy.

Milestones

2009 - Submission and determination of planning consents for designated sports facilities and infrastructure elements to allow implementation to proceed.

2009 onwards - Implementation of scheme level mitigation measures taking into account the findings of the Commonwealth Games Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and associated environmental and project management initiatives. Measures may include construction and logistics planning, sustainable waste management, and carbon offsetting.

2010 - Construction of the National Indoor Sports Arena (NISA) and Velodrome, the Commonwealth Games Village, along with all the necessary infrastructure for the event and to create a mixed exemplary community in the heart of the Clyde Gateway.

2014 - Facilities ready for Games .

2009 - 2014 - Reflect the aims of the Clyde Gateway initiative and the Glasgow 2014 Ltd - 'Delivering a Lasting Legacy Framework', in development plans, associated action programmes, masterplans, development briefs and development management decisions.

Progress

June, 2011 - The planning application for the Commonwealth Games village has been approved and construction work has started. The 38.5-hectare site in Dalmarnock will house up to 6,500 competitors and officials during the Games and the extended site will eventually accommodate around 1400 homes and a care home.

Construction of the National Indoor Sports Arena and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome is at an advanced stage and is on course to be completed in 2012. The Scottish National Arena is under construction and the venue is due to be completed in summer 2013.

May 2010 - construction of National Indoor Sports Arena and Velodrome underway. Planning permission granted for Tolcross Pool facilities extension. Planning application for the Commonwealth Games village submitted.

May 7, 2010 - £2.8 million investment from European Regional Development Fund to support the redevelopment and refurbishment of Dalmarnock station announced.

April 7, 2009 - Planning application granted for the erection of National Indoor Sports Arena and Velodrome with community sports facilities, soft landscaping, car parking and external cycle track and SUDS pond.
