2014 Commonwealth Games

On November 9, 2007, Scotland's bid to host the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 was successful.

The Scottish Government is one of three Scottish partners in the Games, and will contribute 80 per cent to the net public cost of the Games. The other partners are Glasgow City Council, who will contribute 20 per cent to the net public cost of the Games, and the Commonwealth Games Scotland.

The Opening Ceremony of the XXth Commonwealth Games will take place at Celtic Park on July 23, 2014. The Games themselves will be delivered by the Games Organising Committee.

The Scottish Government

The Scottish Government is responsible for ensuring that all the necessary legislative measures are taken to ensure compliance with the requirements set out by the Commonwealth Games Federation. We are also responsible for ensuring delivery of major infrastructure projects already planned, and for the security of the Games. We work closely with Commonwealth Games delivery partners on the Games: Glasgow 2014 Ltd (the Organising Committee), Glasgow City Council, Commonwealth Games Scotland and have entered into a number of agreements with them to ensure the success of the Games.

Games Delivery Team

The Games Delivery Team represents Scottish Government's interests in all aspects of delivery of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The Games Delivery Team oversees sponsorship and funding of the Organising Committee. We provide secretariat services to the Glasgow 2014 Strategic Group and the Glasgow 2014 Working Group. We co-ordinate Scottish Government's input into delivery of London 2012 Olympic Games. We are also responsible for Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and London 2012 Olympic Games legislation where it impacts on Scotland.

Overseeing the delivery of the Games is the Glasgow 2014 Strategic Group, chaired by the First Minister. The group provides strategic direction to the Organising Committee and monitors the Organising Committee's annual business plans. Membership of the Strategic Group comprises representatives from the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council, Commonwealth Games Scotland and the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee. The Strategic Group currently meets around 6 times each year.

The Scottish Government is on hand to provide advice to the International Children's Games in Lanarkshire in 2011 and Scottish Commonwealth Teams as they prepare for the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010 and the Commonwealth Youth Games on the Isle of Man in 2011.
