Scottish Steering Group

Scottish Steering Group

Following the decision being made to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, Scottish Ministers at the time agreed to establish a structure within Scotland to consider how to maximise the benefits that the London 2012 Games can bring to Scotland. That structure comprised a top level Scottish Steering Group for London 2012 supported by three themed sub-groups to look more closely at specific issues: culture and education; sport; and economic development.

Now that Glasgow has won the rights to stage the Commonwealth Games in 2014, the Scottish Government has taken on the responsibility for the legacy element of the 2014 Games. Because it made sense, we reviewed our 2012 committee structure to incorporate 2014, with a primary focus on 2014.

As a result, the Scottish Steering Group for London 2012 was folded and reconstituted to cover both Games with a primary focus on 2014. We have now established a Scottish Legacy Board to help drive forward the development and delivery of our Games Legacy Plan. This is chaired by a senior official within the Scottish Government and comprises leaders from our key external stakeholder bodies.

This will be supported by six sub-groups themed in line with the Scottish Government's five strategic objectives: Wealthier and Fairer; Healthier; Smarter; Safer and Stronger; and Greener; with an additional one specifically covering sport. These sub-groups will play a pivotal role in delivering measurable legacy outcomes. Their membership is a mixture of representatives from within the Scottish Government and our external stakeholder bodies.

Progress will ultimately be overseen by a Games Legacy Cabinet Delivery Group, chaired by the Deputy First Minister and comprising Scottish Ministers covering all portfolios.

Scottish Government has a designated Games Legacy Team who will support this structure and co-ordinate the development and delivery of a Games Legacy Plan for Scotland.
