1. Main Points
1.1 There were a total of 13,324 road casualties reported in 2010, (1,719 or 11% fewer than 2009), the lowest figure recorded. Of which there were:
- 208 fatalities: 8 (or 4%) fewer than 2009
- 1,960 seriously injured: 326 (or 14%) less than 2009
- 11,156 slightly injured : 1,385 (or 11%) fewer than 2009 [ Table 2]
1.2 In 2010 there were 1,375 child casualties reported, 98 (7%) fewer than in 2009. This included 4 fatalities: 1 less death than in 2009. [ Table 4]
1.3 In 2010 there were:
- 8,293 car users injured (-13% on 2009); including 105 fatalities (-9% on 2009).
- 2,011 pedestrian casualties (-9% on 2009); incl. 47 fatalities (the same as 2009),
- 844 motorcyclist casualties (-17%) ; including 35 fatalities (8 less than 2009)
- 781 pedal cyclist casualties (-3%); including 7 fatalities (2 more than 2009)
- 538 bus and coach user casualties in 2010 (14% higher than 2009). [ Table 3]
1.4 Male road casualties fell by 11% (to 7,534 in 2010), with fatalities falling by 10% (to 146). Female road casualties fell by 12% (to 5,780) with fatalities increasing by 15% (to 62). 19% (2,488) of all casualties were aged 16-22, of which 1,457 were male (11% of all casualties) and 1,031 were female (8% of all casualties). 1.5 There are 3 national targets for casualty reductions by 2010 - a larger reduction in casualties has been achieved in each case:
- 2,168 people were killed or seriously injured in 2010, 55% below the 1994-98 baseline average level (target of 40%) [ Table 2]
- 226 children were killed or seriously injured in 2010: 73% below the 1994-98 average (target of 50%). [ Tables 4& 6]
- A slight casualty rate of 28.36 casualties per 100 million vehicle kilometres in 2009 (the latest available traffic volume estimate): 39% below the 1994-98 average (target of 10%). [ Table 7]
