Main Findings

Scottish Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in constant basic prices grew by 0.5 per cent during the third quarter of 2010.

Growth was strongest in Construction, up 6.2 per cent, and the Services sector grew 0.1 per cent. Output in Production fell by 0.3 per cent overall, within which Manufacturing increased 0.7 per cent.

In the twelve months to the end of September, GDP fell by 0.1 per cent compared to the previous year.

GDP Analysed by Industry Sectors

During the third quarter of 2010, Services sector output in Scotland grew by 0.1 per cent, the Production sector fell by 0.3 per cent, and the Construction sector grew by 6.2 per cent.

On an annual basis (comparing the most recent four quarters to the previous four quarters), output in the Services sector fell by 0.3 per cent, the Production sector fell by 1.3 per cent, and the Construction sector grew by 3.7 per cent.

Contribution to Growth

In the most recent quarter, the largest contributor to growth was the Construction sector, followed by Government & Other Services and Distribution, Hotels & Catering. The largest negative contribution was from the Business Services & Finance sector, with a fall also seen in Production.

Index of Production

Total production output fell -0.3 per cent, compared with growth of 2.5 per cent in 2010 Q2.

Manufacturing increased 0.7 per cent, following growth of 2.5 per cent in the previous quarter. The main sources of this growth were in Other Manufacturing (+1.8%), Chemicals & Manmade Fibres (+3.7%), and Food, Drink & Tobacco (+1.3%). There was a significant fall in Metals & Metal Products (-2.8%).

Output in Mining and Quarrying decreased by -2.3% compared with growth of 1.1% last quarter. Electricity, Gas & Water Supply fell -4.1% following growth of 3.4% last quarter.

Index of Construction

Construction increased 6.2 per cent in the most recent quarter, following growth of 7.6 per cent in 2010 Q2.

Index of Services

Overall output in the Services sector grew 0.1 per cent in the most recent quarter, following growth of 0.5 per cent in 2010 Q2.

Distribution, Hotels and Catering

Output in Distribution, Hotels and Catering increased 0.5 per cent this quarter, compared with growth of 1.3 per cent in 2010 Q2. The main source of this growth was in Retail and Wholesale (+0.7%).

Transport, Storage and Communication

Transport, storage and communication increased 0.4 per cent, following a decrease of 2.0 per cent in 2010 Q2. The main source of this growth was the Communications component. (+1.8%).

Business Services and Finance

Output in Business Services and Finance declined by 0.4 per cent in the most recent quarter, following an increase of 1.2 per cent in 2010 Q2. This fall was driven by Financial Services (-1.5%), while output in Real Estate & Business Services remained unchanged.

Government and Other Services

Output in Government and Other Services increased 0.4 per cent in the most recent quarter, compared with growth of 0.1 per cent in 2010 Q2. The main source of this growth was the Other Services sector (+1.9%).

UK Figures

The latest UK figures show that GDP on a comparable basis (constant basic prices) grew by 0.7 per cent in the third quarter of 2010.

On an annual basis (4Q-on-4Q), UK GDP grew by 0.5 per cent.

Over the year to end-September 2010, the UK experienced growth of 0.6 per cent in Services, growth of 1.6 per cent in Construction, and a fall of 0.4 per cent in the Production sector.

In the third quarter of 2010, the UK Services sector grew by 0.5 per cent, the Production sector grew by 0.5 per cent, and the Construction sector grew by 3.9 per cent.
