Dear Consultee

Consultation Paper on the Civil Law of Damages: Damages for Wrongful Death

This letter is to inform you of the launch of the attached Scottish Government consultation on the Civil Law of Damages: Damages for Wrongful Death. (The Justice Committee of the Scottish Parliament has issued a call for evidence in connection with a Members Bill on the same subject www.scottish.parliament.uk/s3/committees/justice/inquiries/Mdamages/Mdamages.htm . That is entirely separate from this consultation exercise, although responses to this one will inform the Scottish Government's approach to the other.)

The consultation has been developed from the recommendations made in the Scottish Law Commission's Report on Damages for Wrongful Death which was published in September 2008. The SLC report can be found on their website at www.scotlawcom.gov.uk/downloads/reps/rep213.pdf

The consultation is only available as an electronic publication, apart from a very limited number published in hard copy for consultees who do not have access to the internet.

We are inviting online or, where this is not possible, written responses to this consultation paper by 27 August 2010. If you have any queries please contact Anne Hampson (Email: Anne.Hampson@scotland.gsi.gov.uk or Tel: 0131 244 2442).

Please indicate in your response which questions you are responding to as this will help our analysis of responses.

Please send your response with the completed Respondent Information Form (see "Handling your response" in the consultation document) to: damages@scotland.gsi.gov.uk or to
