Dear Colleague
HOSPITAL SERVICES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN SCOTLAND
Please find enclosed your copy of the Hospital Services for Young People Report which was published as guidance for NHS Boards on 5 May 2009.
Following the commitment to raise the age limit for children's hospitals from the 13 th to 16 th birthday, the National Delivery Plan for Children and Young People's Specialist Services in Scotland contained a commitment to publish guidance on age appropriate care arrangements for young people who require to spend time in hospital.
This report contains recommendations for NHS Boards and their regional planning partners to ensure that the care they provide for young people meets their particular needs. The report also highlights the need for effective transition arrangements with a recommendation that transition should happen at an appropriate developmental stage for the young person.
Chief Executives and Directors are invited to draw this letter and report to the attention of all with a responsibility for the provision of these services.
Further copies of this letter and the report can be found on the Scottish Government website at www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2009/04/30132716 and all enquiries regarding the report should be directed to Gillian Garvie ( Gillian.Garvie@scotland.gsi.gov.uk) or by telephoning 0131 244 2272.
Yours faithfully

DEREK FEELEY
