INTRODUCTION
1. Scottish seas are world class. They are unique and are highly prized for the diversity they harbour, the resources and employment they provide and the leisure opportunities they offer.
2. There are huge opportunities for the future, including excellent potential for renewable energy generation (through wind, tidal and wave power), sustainable fishing and aquaculture. Coastal communities can benefit from these assets and opportunities, contributing to our aim of a wealthier and fairer society; and to Scotland's economic growth. Scotland is growing as a top marine and coastal destination. Our seas are important to Scottish wellbeing and identity through cultural and leisure pursuits. The marine environment is highly productive, containing over 40,000 species and an internationally important population of marine mammal and sea birds. It is crucial to manage the seas sustainably for future generations.
3. The creation of Marine Scotland demonstrates the Scottish Government's commitment to new improved ways of managing Scottish seas. This represents a ground-breaking approach to better integrated stewardship of Scotland's seas. Marine Scotland will combine core marine functions, be a centre of excellence, and champion Scotland's seas. Our seas are essential to the economic wellbeing of Scotland and our coastal communities.
