PLACING REQUESTS IN SCHOOLS IN SCOTLAND, 2007/08

This document contains results of the latest annual survey of placing requests (requests by parents to local authorities that a child be placed in a specified school).

The main findings, relating to placements for the academic year 2007/08, are:

  • The total number of placing requests received for 2007/08 was 28,498. This is a 0.5 per cent decrease from the previous year ( Table 1).
  • This year 82.3 per cent of all requests were granted, down from 85.0 percent in 2006/07 ( Table 1).
  • Where requests were refused, "Staffing constraints" was the reason reported most commonly, in 53.8 per cent of cases in primary schools and 38.1 per cent of cases in secondary schools ( Table 9). The general increase this year in refusals is primarily in the category of staffing constraints.
  • Sixty two per cent of placing requests (17,766) were primary school requests, of which 86.2 per cent were granted. Placing requests received for stage P1 represented 22.8 per cent of the P1 pupil roll compared with 22.3 per cent of the P1 pupil roll in 2006/07 ( Tables 2, 3 and 7).
  • Thirty seven per cent of placing requests (10,562) were for secondary, of which 76.1 per cent were granted. Placing requests for stage S1 represented 13.6 per cent of the S1 pupil roll compared with 13.0 percent of the S1 pupil roll in 2006/07 ( Tables 2, 4 and 7).
  • Special schools accounted for 0.6 per cent of requests (170), of which 68.2 per cent were granted ( Table 2). Of these, 37 placing requests were for places in grant aided orindependent special schools ( Table 5). Fifty seven per cent of these were granted.
