INTRODUCTION

The Scottish Government's top priority (its 'Purpose') is to focus the Government and public services on creating a more successful country, with opportunities for all of Scotland to flourish, through increasing sustainable economic growth.

The Housing and Regeneration Directorate contributes towards this Purpose.

In the current, unprecedented, economic conditions housing and regeneration policies are playing a critical role in the Scottish Government's economic recovery plan.

In particular, the Scottish Government has extended support for homeowners, helping those at risk of losing their homes, and accelerated funding for affordable housing to increase its supply and support the construction industry. It has also announced, for introduction in April 2009, a new scheme to help reduce bills for those who are 'fuel poor'.
