In 2007-08:

Social Enquiry Reports

  • A total of 42,492 Social Enquiry Reports (including supplementary reports) were submitted by Local Authorities to the Courts in 2007-08, up three per cent from the 2006-07 total of 41,359.
  • A total of 36,393 Social Enquiry Reports (excluding supplementary reports) were submitted to the Courts in 2007-08, an increase of two per cent from 35,565 in 2006-07.

Community Service Orders

  • A total of 6,202 Community Service Orders (excluding Probation Orders with a Requirement of Unpaid Work) were made in 2007-08, a four and half per cent increase on the 2006-07 figure of 5,937.
  • The number of Community Service Orders (excluding Probation Orders with a Requirement of Unpaid Work) which were successfully completed increased by five per cent from 3,569 in 2006-07 to 3,762 in 2007-08. Terminations of Community Service Orders overall (including successful completions) increased by seven per cent from 5,432 in 2006-07 to 5,825 in 2007-08.
  • 2,161 breach applications were made to the Courts in respect of Community Service Orders (excluding Probation Orders with a Requirement of Unpaid Work) in 2007-08, an increase of 14 per cent compared with the 1,892 breach applications in 2006-07.

Probation Orders (including those with a requirement of unpaid work)

  • A total of 8,751 Probation Orders were made in 2007-08, an increase of four per cent compared to the level of 8,404 in 2006-07.
  • The majority (58 per cent) of terminations of Probation Orders were orders which were successfully completed. The number of terminations overall (including successful completions) increased from 6,755 in 2006-07 to 6,849 in 2007-08, an increase of one per cent.
  • 3,400 breach applications were made to the Courts in respect of Probation Orders in 2007-08, a 7 per cent decrease compared to the total of 3,650 in 2006-07.

Probation Orders with a Requirement of Unpaid Work

  • A total of 3,053 Probation Orders with a Requirement of Unpaid Work were made in 2007-08, representing a 22 per cent increase from the 2006-07 total of 2,499.
  • 1,214 breach applications were made to the Courts in respect of POs with a Requirement of Unpaid Work in 2007-08, an increase of five per cent on the 1,157 applications in 2006-07.

Supervised Attendance Orders

  • A total of 4,438 Supervised Attendance Orders were made in 2007-08, up 46 per cent from the total of 3,047 in 2006-07.
  • Of 2,970 Supervised Attendance Orders which were terminated in 2007-08, 1,685 of these were orders which were successfully completed. The total number of terminations of Supervised Attendance Orders increased by nine per cent on the 2006-07 level of 2,724. 1,311 breach applications were made to the Courts in respect of Supervised Attendance Orders in 2007-08, an increase of 17 per cent from the 2006-07 total of 1,125.

Drug Treatment and Testing Orders

  • A total of 601 Drug Treatment and Testing Orders were made in 2007-08, down 14 per cent from 696 in 2006-07.
  • Over a third (37 per cent) of DTTO terminations were due to successful completion. The total number of terminations of DTTOs decreased by 11 per cent from 550 in 2006-07 to 491 in 2007-08. In 2007-08 there were 209 breach applications of DTTOs, a decrease of 34 per cent on the 2006-07 figure of 318 breaches.

Statutory Throughcare

  • In 2007-08, a total of 1,056 Throughcare (in the community) cases commenced, a decrease of 16 per cent from the 1,256 cases which commenced in 2006-07. A further 1,247 Throughcare (in custody) cases commenced, an increase of two per cent from the 1,228 cases which commenced in 2006-07.

Voluntary Assistance and the Throughcare Addiction Service

  • In 2007-08 there were a total of 2,175 individuals receiving voluntary assistance and a total of 2,603 voluntary assistance cases commenced. Of the voluntary assistance cases commenced in 2007-08, 1,424 related to the Throughcare Addiction Service ( TAS).

Home Circumstances Reports

  • A total of 1,386 HCRs excluding home leave reports were reported in 2007-08, an increase of three per cent on the 2006-07 figure of 1,342. Including home leave reports, 2,701 HCRs were reported in 2007-08.

Diversion from Prosecution

  • A total of 956 Diversion from Prosecution cases commenced in 2007-08, a decrease of 16 per cent from the 2006-07 total of 1,133 cases.

Bail Information

  • During 2007-08, 7,957 requests were made by Courts to local authorities for bail information, a decrease of 11 per cent since 2006-07. A total of 729 bail supervision cases commenced in the year, relating to 657 individuals.

Court Services

  • A total of 2,309 stand down reports were provided to the Courts in 2007-08 and 13,770 post sentence interviews were carried out.
