This is the fourth Key Findings report to be produced since the SHCS moved to a continuous format in 2003. Prior to 2003 surveys were conducted in 1991, 1996 and 2002 and typically consisted of sample sizes of around 15,000 paired social and physical cases. The 2003/4, 2004/5, 2005/6 and, now, 2007 surveys have a sample size of around 3,000 paired cases.

This research documents Scottish Health Boards’ current patient experience activities and Boards representatives’ experiences of and attitudes towards patient experience. The research also examined expectations of the Scottish Patient Experience Programme and beliefs about patients’ priorities.

The research includes the views of hospital inpatients, people with a long-term health condition and the views of people about general practice services. The results of this research will be used to help design a range of instruments which will gather patient’s experiences of healthcare as inpatients, users of GP services and people with long-term conditions.
