ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The researchers would like to thank the Research Advisory Group that has worked closely with the team and has provided valuable advice and guidance throughout this project. Key members of the group included Michael McDonnell, Road Safety Scotland; Carol Brown and Jane Strachan, Scottish Government; Gillian Govan and Rebecca Harrison, The Union advertising agency; Neil Greig, IAM Motoring Trust. Inevitably over the course of a long study individuals move on. Others who have played some part in the study, either replacing, or being replaced by the core group include Sharon Glen, Scottish Government, who was responsible for steering the development of the brief and involved in the early stages and Pauline Lamb and Mark Reid at The Union who joined the group in the later stages of the study.
We are grateful to the three police forces, Strathclyde, Lothian and Borders, and Northern, who provided access to original STATS 19 reports and to Helen Mann, Transport Research Institute, who visited the police forces' headquarters to transcribe the qualitative comments contained in the reports. Our thanks also go to Superintendent Pat Docherty, Strathclyde Police and ACPOS representative to RSS, who helped arrange that access.
The idea to use a series of photographs of different road conditions in the research was suggested by Gillian Govan and arose out of work undertaken by Terence Lee and Jason Frowley of the University of St Andrews described in a paper presented at the Road Safety Scotland Annual Seminar (Lee & Frowley, 2006). Some of the photographs used in the research were taken specifically for use in this study. Others were taken from a website provided by Frederick Ramm which includes pictures from a tour of North West Scotland 1. The Union sourced pictures and road signs for use in the qualitative research.
A number of the questions used in the questionnaire relating to driving speeds and speeding have previously been used in earlier studies conducted by Professor Steve Stradling of the study team, who also undertook the statistical analysis on this element of the research. Jason Hockley of TNS worked closely with the researchers on the remaining statistical analyses of the data.
Finally, we would like to thank the rural road drivers who took part in the survey and in the focus group discussions and provided us with the information contained in this report.
