Source: SAAS management information. Student numbers in this table have been rounded up or down to the nearest 5.

1. Cash totals may not equal the sum of their constituent parts due to rounding. 2. Fee loans were introduced in 2006/07 for students studying outside Scotland.

  • Full fees - The normal maximum public fee rate of £1,200 for existing students, £1,700 for new students, £2,700 for medical students, and £3,160 for postgraduate students.
  • Half fees - Paid to students on work placements or those on years abroad where they attend the home HEI for less than 10 weeks.
  • Other fees - There are a few private institutions that get more than the public fee rate (usually theology-related).

Also takes account of the income assessed fees. These will be cases where SAAS pay some of the normal public fee rate and the student pays the rest. Also students who are repeating a year of study get £500 of their fee paid by SAAS so that they are not penalised by the new £1700 maximum public fee rate.

  • Fee Loans - Eligible students who begin their course of study in 2006-2007 and are studying outside Scotland, or who are returning after a break in study of a year or more, can apply for a loan to pay some or all of their fees.

From the above table, it can be seen that over 97% of students receiving fee support receive their full fees.

Fee payments increased by 15.2% in 2006-07 because of increased fee rates to £1,700 for new students and £2,700 for medical students.
