"Pre-school class - other public" includes pre-school classes in grant-aided schools and other centres in the public sector where it was not known whether the centre was LA or partnership or whether it was attached to a school. See background notes for details.
Children are counted once for each centre they are registered with.
Children may cross local authority boundaries to attend pre-school education.
367 centres did not provide information about registrations. Where possible, figures from the 2006 census have been used for those centres (246 centres). For the remaining 121, the median numbers of registrations for each type of pre-school have been applied.
There were two centres in Eilean Siar for which the median numbers of pre-school children were applied. As centres in this local authority tend to be much smaller than in other local authorities, the medians used were those of the local authority rather than the whole country.
The number of registrations in centres providing pre-school education in Gaelic may be an undercount as 200 centres did not answer the question about Gaelic. Where the information was provided in the 2006 census (90 centres), this was used.
