FARM AND FOREST VISITS AND TALKS (Tier 2)
Article 52 (a)(iii)
Measure Code (313)
Rationale for Intervention
In Scotland much of the population is urban and has limited understanding and awareness of the services that the land-based sector provides in terms of food and wood production, conservation of the natural and historic environment, management of the landscape, production of industrial crops and biofuel, and its wider contribution to tourism and rural services. Support for land managers to raise awareness, respect and understanding of our countryside through " first hand" experience is a simple way of encouraging land managers to promote what they do, and the environment they live in, through an interactive approach.
Without a financial incentive this public service will not be undertaken by many land managers as the daily tasks required to keep their businesses viable in a competitive environment will be their main focus.
Objectives of the measure
The aim of this option is to increase public awareness of land management and to provide educational experiences for children and young people. It will give people a better understanding of the contribution land managers make to their local community and the local environment. Support for visits will also facilitate guided access to natural areas which will help enhance the visitor's experience.
Scope and Actions
Payment will be provided to encourage land managers to host visits to their farm or forest or give talks to groups not associated with land management such as schools, youth groups, community groups and international visitors.
