8. Child Casualties ( Table 7)

8.1 The provisional total of 2,005 child casualties reported in 2006 represented about a eighth of the total number of casualties of all ages (12%: 2,005 out of 17,077). Of the child casualties, 369 were killed or seriously injured, of whom 25 died. This was 14 more deaths than in 2005, but still the seventh lowest figure since current records began; the total number of child casualties fell by 167 (8%).

8.2 There were 985 child pedestrian casualties recorded in 2006. They accounted for 35% of all pedestrian casualties of all ages (985 out of 2,822). Of the child pedestrian casualties, 245 were killed or seriously injured (9 died). The number killed was 4 more than in 2005 and the total number of killed and seriously injured was 1 more than in 2005.

8.3 In 2006, there were 652 child casualties in cars, 6% of the total number of car user casualties of all ages (652 out of 10,596). Of the child casualties in cars, 69 were killed or seriously injured (10 died): 9 more than in 2005. In 2006, there were 206 child pedal cycle casualties (27% of the total of 767 pedal cycle casualties of all ages), 101 child bus and coach user casualties (13% of the total of 753 of all ages) and 61 other child casualties. The child pedal cycle casualties included 39 who were killed or seriously injured (5 died).
