Housing Trends in Scotland: Quarter Ending 31 December 2006

Introduction

This bulletin presents data on housing activity in Scotland for October to December 2006. It includes information on public sector house sales, new house building, and local authority lettings and evictions. Due to housing stock transfers, figures for some local authorities are not included from the point of transfer onward ( see explanatory notes).

The main points to emerge from the bulletin are as follows:

1. New house building: 5,783 new dwellings were started during the period October to December 2006, 23 (under 1%) more than during the same period in the previous year. 6,310 dwellings were completed, 450 (8%) more than during the same period in 2005.

2. Sales of social sector dwellings: A total of 1,990 public authority dwellings were sold to sitting tenants in the period October to December 2006, a decrease of 233 (10%) on the same period in 2005.

3. Lettings and evictions: During the quarter October to December 2006, there were 7,444 permanent lettings of local authority dwellings, 247 (3%) less than during the same quarter in the previous year. There were 241 evictions of local authority tenants this quarter, 5 (2%) less than during October to December 2005.
