Workforce Characteristics - further statistical information

Working patterns

Figure A shows the proportion of each staff group working full and part time. Within the clinical group, nursing and midwifery staff have the highest proportion working part time. Within the non clinical group, ancillary staff have the highest proportion working part time. Interestingly, there has been no change in contract type over all staff groups (41.1% in 2005 versus 41.0% in 2004). However, there has been a small reduction in medical and dental consultants working part time - falling from 17.9% in 2004 to 16.1% in 2004 for medical staff; and from 6.0% to 4.9% for dentists.

Gender

Over three-quarters of the workforce are female (77.9%). This is largely accounted for by the high proportion of females in the AHP (90.6%), nursing and midwifery (89.9%) and administrative and clerical staff groups (87.0%). Comparison to last year shows that there has been no significant gender shift overall or by staff group.

As Figure C shows, the percentage of each staff group that is female ranges from under 1% for trades staff to 91% of AHPs.
