Nitrate Vulnerable Zones

The EU Nitrates Directive (91/676/EEC) on pollution caused by agricultural sources requires Member States to identify and designate areas where nitrate concentrations have reached or are approaching 50mg/l in either groundwater or surface waters. In Scotland, 14% of the land area has been designated as Nitrate Vulnerable Zones ( NVZs). These areas are in Aberdeenshire, Moray, Banff and Buchan; Strathmore and Fife; Lothian and the Borders; and Lower Nithsdale. In these areas legally binding measures must be implemented to reduce the risk of nitrogen losses to water by leaching and/or run off. These measures are known as Action Programmes. All farmers within the designated NVZ areas must comply with the Action Programme measures.
