Introduction

This bulletin presents data on housing activity in Scotland for the third quarter of 2005. It includes information on public sector house sales, new house building, and local authority lettings and evictions. Due to housing stock transfers, figures for local authority dwellings do not include authorities with total stock transfers from 2003 quarter 2 onwards.

The main points to emerge from the bulletin are as follows:

1. New house building: 5,391 new dwellings were started during the period July to September 2005, 1,286 (19%) less than during the same period in the previous year. 5,354 dwellings were completed during July to September 2005, 1,854 (26%) less than during the same period in 2004.

2. Sales of public authority dwellings: A total of 2,340 public authority dwellings were sold to sitting tenants in the period July to September 2005, a decrease of 666 (22%) on the same period in 2004.

3. Lettings and evictions: During the quarter July to September 2005, there were 7,841 permanent lettings of local authority dwellings, 716 (8%) less than during the same quarter in the previous year. There were 224 evictions of local authority tenants this quarter, 36 (14%) less than during July to September 2004.
