Listen

PURPOSE

The Water Environment and Water Services (Scotland) Act 2003 (the WEWS Act) requires controls to be introduced to secure good status for the rivers, lochs, groundwater and other water bodies in Scotland.

This consultation document sets out the Executive's proposals for a package of measures, including a set of controls, to tackle diffuse pollution from rural land use as part of this framework for the future management of our rivers, lochs, coasts and groundwater.

The paper focuses on 3 key aspects

  • The water pollution problems associated with rural land use
  • links with existing environmental guidance and legislation
  • the introduction of possible controls aimed at protecting the water environment.
