SCOTTISH NEIGHBOURHOOD STATISTICS: OCTOBER 2005 UPDATE
Highlights of the October 2005 Update
The Scottish Executive released the fifth quarterly update of the Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics ( SNS) Internet site today. SNS Internet site can be accessed at www.sns.gov.uk.
The October update includes new data zone level mid year population estimates. Population estimates will be available by sex and 5 year age groups for each of the 6505 data zones. Estimates are available for 2001 through 2004, and build on the 2001 Census estimates. The population estimates are consistent with the Registrar General's mid-year population estimates at local authority level. Data zone level population estimates for 2005 are planned to be available for October 2006.
The data zone level population estimates support national and local policy, and will be used in a wide range of planning, profiling, targeting, and monitoring activities.
Further information about the data zone population estimates project including plans for future evaluation can be found at http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/statistics/library/small-area-population-estimates/index.html. The 'Area Data Guide' section of the SNS Internet site also provides further information.
Background about Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics
Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics is the Scottish Executive's on-going programme to improve the availability, consistency and accessibility of small area statistics in Scotland. The SNS internet site provides statistics about local communities and makes use of the data zone small area geography which contains on average 750 residents.
Local communities can be expressed in terms of groups of these data zones, and the internet site contains a wide range of socio-economic statistics describing the characteristics of these communities. New socio-economic data is added on a quarterly basis and this will allow change in the circumstances of local communities to be better understood.
This information is being used to inform the Scottish Executive's approach to improving the quality of life for people living in Scotland and especially in the most disadvantaged areas. The information is also invaluable to Community Planning Partnerships and public sector agencies where the availability of up-to-date high quality information is crucial to the way in which services are developed and delivered and issues of local concern are addressed. It will also help community groups bring together information to support grant applications.
