On 31 March 2005 there were 45 care homes for physically disabled people providing 531 places and with 475 residents. Amongst the 523 available places 457 (87 per cent) were in single rooms and 317 (61 per cent) offered en-suite facilities.

The figures show very little change from September 2004 when the same 45 homes provided 542 places to 474 residents. Since March 2000 the number of care homes has increased by 4 from 41. In the same period, the number of registered places has fallen from 831, a reduction of 300 places, and the number of residents has dropped from 731, down by 256. During this period the average care home size has fallen from 20.3 places to 11.8 places.

Of the 45 care homes for physically disabled people, the majority, 36 (or 80 per cent) were operated by voluntary organisations. These voluntary homes offered 434 places to residents (81.7 per cent of all places). Just under 90 per cent of available places were in single rooms whilst 58.2 per cent offered en-suite facilities. Of the remaining 9 care homes, 3 were operated by local authorities and 6 were in the private sector.

Table 13 omits any homes that later deregistered (after March 2002) to become Housing Support services (more information on those can be found in annex F).
