Brief description of the aims of the project

New building - National Nexus for the Performing Arts:

    • To provide valuable shared facilities to meet the needs of the national arts bodies in terms of rehearsal, small scale and innovative performance, and shared support services [eg finance, administration, marketing] .
    • To further the aims of the Cultural Commission through the RSAMD's position as a unique national and international resource.

Clear description of what the EGF money would be used to buy

Contribution towards the cost of the building and expertise to prepare detailed feasibility studies for the building itself and for the concept of shared administration.

The collaboration would be cross-sectoral ie between bodies in receipt of government funding from sources such as SHEFC and SAC

Partners to the project likely to commit resources

    Royal Scottish National Orchestra

    Glasgow City Council

    Scottish Enterprise

Names of other organizations with whom the project has been discussed

    (to assist the introductions process)

Early discussions with NYOS, NCOS and Scottish Ballet

Evidence that suggested approach has been deployed successfully elsewhere

This would be a unique development.

Are there any restrictions to potential for enlargement of the project (ie technology, number of partners, etc)

We would expect the project to evolve so that more partners would be involved in future. The building would also provide cutting-edge space for media, inter-disciplinary and inter-company developments.

    Benefits projected from the project

    • Improved efficiency for national arts organisations through cross-sectoral [ HE/ publicly funded arts bodies and other theatre/music groups] collaboration and joint-working
    • Savings from the shared central services - Front of House, Marketing, technical support, venue maintenance, finance and general administration
    • Efficient use of buildings and assets through sharing of expensive performance spaces and facilities
    • Enhanced teaching and learning opportunities through collaborative projects and placements; also a better link-up between the profession and education

    Estimated project benefits

Potential for substantial savings. Need stage 2 development funding to give an estimate

    Is a pilot required?

    No

    Why is EG funding required?

RSAMD receives no Capital funding at present from SHEFC and the National arts bodies have minimal or no reserves.

Is this project complementary in anyway to other EG work

    Too early to say

Is stage 2 development funding requested?

    Yes
