Careers for Health Information and Guidance

What jobs are there in the Health Service?

The NHS in Scotland (NHSScotland) is one of the largest employers in Scotland with over 140,000 staff in a huge variety of jobs. The sheer variety of occupations and number involved may surprise you, all of which contribute to healthcare in one way or another.

The development of new technologies and cultural changes are having a dramatic effect on the delivery of healthcare in 21st-century Scotland.

These changes are helping NHSScotland deliver a high quality service from a patient's point of view - high quality care and treatment delivered at the right place and right time, with dignity and respect.

This booklet shows, from Administration and Clerical Staff to Telephonists, the job opportunities within NHSScotland, the entry qualifications and training requirements. Hopefully, it will help you see where you could fit in as part of this national team.

The qualifications outlined for entry to a particular course or training programme are generally the minimum standard expected.

Entry requirements to some colleges or universities can differ to what is listed so it is worth contacting your local establishment directly using the contact details provided.
