- Data zones were released in February 2004 and are aggregations of Census output areas. The median size of a data zone is 750 people.

- On average, Census output areas have a population of approximately 120 and enumeration districts have a population of approximately 320.
- The average ward population is approximately 4,100 though this ranges from just over 650 to around 10,000. Similarly postcode sectors range in population from around 100 to over 35,000 with an average of approximately 5,500.
