The methodology of the SIMD 2004 is based on the work developed by the Social Disadvantage Research Centre (SDRC) at the University of Oxford. The 2003 SID for Scotland can be accessed at http://www.scotland.gov.uk/library5/social/siod-00.asp

The SDRC have also developed multiple deprivation indices for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. These include:

  • Noble, M., G. Smith, B. Penhale, G. Wright, C. Dibben, T. Owen and M. Lloyd (2000), Measuring Multiple Deprivation at the Local Level: The Indices of Deprivation 2000, DETR
  • Noble, M., G. Smith, B. Penhale, G. Wright, C. Dibben, T. Owen and M. Lloyd (2000), Response to the Formal Consultation on the Indices of Deprivation 2000, DETR
  • Noble, M., G. Smith, G. Wright, C. Dibben, M. Lloyd, and B. Penhale (2000), Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation 2000, The National Assembly for Wales
  • Noble, M., G. Smith, G. Wright, C. Dibben and M. Lloyd (2001), The Northern Ireland Multiple Deprivation Measure, NISRA

The reports on these measures and their associated papers provided valuable information on the technicalities of the methodology.

The SIMD 2004 is the first output from the 'long term strategy for measuring deprivation' which was developed in partnership with the Scottish Centre for Research on Social Justice. This report can be found at http://www.scotland.gov.uk/library5/social/mdis-00.asp

The SIMD 2004 has been developed as part of the Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics Project. More information about this project can be found at www.sns.gov.uk
