Gross value added equates to the value of an output (goods or services) less the value of inputs used in that output's production process.
The numbers used to illustrate the examples do not match published estimates. At the time of the move to chain-linking methodology a number of revisions were made to data sources in line with our ongoing policy to improve data quality where possible. In the examples, the effects of these revisions have been removed to provide a clearer picture of the impact of the new methodology.
The chain-linked index uses annual weights for each year between 1994 and 2000. The 2000 weights only are shown here for illustration. The 1995 weights shown here are those used in the fixed-base methodology. The 1995 weights used for chain-linking were revised in some cases where new and improved data sources were available.
A total of 21 individual indices feed into the E&IE index but all cannot be shown individually for confidentiality reasons. These have been aggregated into 5 groups for illustrative purposes.

The threshold for deregistration is actually slightly lower than the threshold for registration (to avoid firms repeatedly moving between registration and deregistration).

We cannot say that 7.5% of closures in 2003 involved an insolvency because the insolvency and deregistration do not happen at the same time.
This is probably an underestimate of the number of units(?) because (a) some non-response, and (b) some people may have started another business.
1,700 of this change is due to revisions of the Labour Force Survey data

This is also sometimes referred to as a 'benefit unit', as defined by the Department for Work and Pensions.
