The Edinburgh coastline extends for 26 km from South Queensferry to Joppa. Its importance is acknowledged by inclusion in the Edinburgh Biodiversity Action Plan 2000, through the coastal and marine habitat action plan. The objectives of the plan are to maintain and enhance the extent and quality of Edinburgh's coastal and marine habitat through targeted conservation action.

A five-year target was set to:

  • increase understanding and awareness of the extent and quality of Edinburgh's coastal and marine habitats, the natural processes on which they depend and the threats to their conservation.

  • Achieve legal protection for all intertidal habitats and prevent their further loss and damage.

  • Maintain and enhance dune grassland and identify the major bird roost sites as suitable and free from disturbance.

The review process for the 2000-04 action plan has started. Monitoring of the previous targets has shown that many have been met. There is much work still to be done, however, and the new plan for 2004-09 will aim to build on this promising start.
