coverDesigning Places Award

This year at the Scottish Awards for Quality in Planning, the Scottish Executive, in association with The Lighthouse, gave a new urban design award to planning students, called the Designing Places Award. It is for urban design work that has been carried out as part of planning courses, whether a project, dissertation, essay or report. It is open to all undergraduate and post graduate students. Entrants can be an individual or a group. It is hoped that the new award will raise the profile of design, test ability and provide an opportunity for students and professionals to mix and discuss each others work.

"Higher standards of design depend on the attitude, knowledge and skills of everyone involved in the development process" Designing Places, November 2001.

Nine entries were received from Heriot-Watt University and from the University of Dundee. The judges selected a short list of five and viewed each applicant's coursework in association with their presentation board. The judges awarded 1 Award, 1 Special Commendation and 3 Commendations.
