1. These are included in the totals for Scotland as a whole, which are given in Table 8.1. These figures exclude the Glasgow Subway, figures for which appear in table 8.9 .
2. Figures affected by industrial action.
3. Scheduled train miles are calculated by the Strategic Rail Authority using the published winter and summer timetables.
Therefore, they do not take account of subsequent changes (e.g. cancellations and emergency timetables etc).
4. Loaded train miles represent the number of train miles actually run in passenger-carrying service.
Therefore, they take account of (e.g.) cancellations and emergency timetables.
5. Adjusted approximately for general inflation using the Retail Prices index for the relevant calendar year (e.g. "2001" RPI used for 2001-02).
6. This figure is only a broad indication, because the ScotRail "scheduled" and SPT "loaded" train miles are on different bases.

1. Excluding Channel Tunnel rail traffic prior to 1996-97
2. From 1996-97, "outwith the UK" includes freight imported via ports in England and Wales, which then comes by rail into Scotland (previously, such freight was counted as lifted "elsewhere in the UK").
It should be noted that, in all years, imported freight lifted at Scottish ports is counted under "lifted in Scotland".
3. "Minerals" (including coal and coke) from 1996-97; "Coal and coke" only for earlier years
