1. The figures for 1992 and 1993 are on different bases, due to a change in the source of the statistics: see the Notes to chapter 1.
2. Results to 1994 are taken from geographical analysis provided by DVLA. Results for 1995 onwards are estimated using post town area.
data. The vehicle taxation system was subject to major revisions from July 1995.
3. These figures are for the financial years (April to March) which start in the relevant year (eg the "1995" figures are for the 1995-96 financial year).
4. Freight lifted in Scotland by UK-registered hauliers, regardless of whether the destination is in Scotland, elsewhere in the UK or outwith the UK.
5. Again, all freight lifted in Scotland. The figures are for the financial years starting in the relevant years (eg the "1996" figure is for 1996-97).

6. For historical reasons, the "coastal shipping" series comprises freight lifted in Scotland plus freight lifted elsewhere in the UK which has a destination in Scotland. This definition differs from the definition of "coastwise shipping" used in Chapter 10.
7. The estimated amounts of crude oil and products carried by pipelines over 50km in length.
8. One-way tolls were introduced for Tay bridge (1 June 1991) and Forth bridge (1 September 1997) so figures after these dates have been estimated by the Scottish Executive. The Skye bridge opened during October 1995. See notes and sources.
9. At 1 April. In 1996, some former trunk roads were "detrunked", and some non-trunk roads became trunk roads.
10. The figures for 1993 onwards have been revised, following improvements to the Department for Transport's method of estimating the volume of road traffic.
11. Those services for which figures are (at least) available back to 1975: Caledonian MacBrayne, P&O Scottish Ferries / NorthLink Orkney & Shetland, and Orkney Ferries
