This leaflet provides the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. Further information can be found at the various websites listed.

When will Chartered Teacher Programmes become available?

Chartered Teacher Programmes will be available from August 2003. Providers of Chartered Teacher Programmes will be accredited by the GTCS. A list of approved providers will be published in the summer and regularly updated by the GTCS.

Can I automatically become a Chartered Teacher?

No. You can only become a Chartered Teacher by following one of the routes outlined in the GTCS leaflet "Taking the First Steps to becoming a Chartered Teacher". This leaflet is available on the GTCS website www.gtcs.org.uk

How will my previous learning and experience count if I decide to embark on a Chartered Teacher Programme?

All teachers must undertake module 1 - Self Evalutaion.

There will be two routes for accreditation of prior learning.

    • Providers will handle the first route as part of their programme designed to meet the Standard for Chartered Teacher and will allow a teacher to claim up to a maximum of 50% of the Standard by APL.
    • The second route will be handled by the GTCS and will allow teachers to make a 100% claim against the Standard by APL. Further information about this route will be available at www.gtcs.org.uk This route will only be available for five years from August 2003.
Will I have to pay for my APL claim?

Yes. Both routes for making an APL claim will incur a cost that is payable by the teacher. The costs of making a claim via the first route will be determined by individual provider partnerships. The cost for making a 100% claim through the GTCS will be 1200. It is expected that this cost will be payable over a period of time to be agreed by the GTCS. Further information will be available on the GTCS website from June 2003.

When will I receive my salary increments?

Teachers will receive salary increments on the successful completion of every two modules:

If I make a successful APL claim what will that mean for any salary increment I receive?

Those teachers who have undertaken an APL claim will have the outcome confirmed by the GTCS and will thereafter receive a salary increment based on the number of modules for which they have been given credit.

    For example:

    • A teacher having completed module 1 and made a successful claim for six additional modules (through their provider) and confirmed by the GTCS would be moved to salary point CT3. Thereafter, on completion of one further module they would move to salary point CT4. The teacher would then have to complete successfully additional modules to receive further salary increments towards the eventual award of Chartered Teacher status.

    diagram

    • A teacher who has completed module 1 can make a claim against the whole Standard through the GTCS. This claim will be assessed by an independent panel and the teacher notified of the level of success of their claim. For example, a teacher who has been awarded the equivalent of 10 modules would be placed on salary point CT5. Thereafter, on completion of one further module the teacher would be placed on salary point CT6 and will be awarded the status of Chartered Teacher by the GTCS.

    application

I am already on salary point CT3. When will my salary increments take effect?

Assistant Principal Teachers and Senior Teachers will, for salary purposes only, be placed on point 3 of the Chartered Teacher range in August 2003. A teacher who has been placed on point 3 of the scale, for salary purposes only, would have to be given credit for, or complete, a total of 8 modules before she/he would receive the first salary increment to point 4 on the range.

Why is there no automatic accreditation of previously gained qualifications?

Qualifications that pre-date the publication of the Standard for Chartered Teacher will not be able to be matched directly to the key components of the Standard. In particular the Standard for Chartered Teacher places significant emphasis on professional action. Teachers who have undertaken post-graduate qualifications will, however, be able to draw on this material when establishing a claim, but may also wish to combine this with evidence drawn from their own professional action
