APPENDIX C TRAVEL TO WORK AREAS

1991 Census data

C.1 Analysis of travel to work areas using the 1991 census data was undertaken by the Scottish Executive for the Cities Review. Data from this analysis has been obtained and plotted by postcode sector for each of the four cities as shown in Figures C1 to C4. The mapping shows the percentage of the resident population in any Scottish postcode sector who worked in the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen at the time of the 1991 census. Although this data is now rather old, it remains the only comprehensive data at a small area level.

C.2 The 10% and over travel to work area extends to the Campsies in the North, Erskine in the west, Newton Mearns in the south and Baillieston in the east. The influence of more remote commuter towns can be seen for Irvine, Carluke, Dunblane etc. but in none of these cases does the number of Glasgow commuters exceed the 10% level.
