MANAGING RADIOACTIVE WASTE SAFELY: SUMMARY OF RESPONSES TO THE CONSULTATION

INTRODUCTION

1. The consultation paper Managing radioactive waste safely was published jointly by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Scottish Executive, the National Assembly for Wales and the Department of the Environment Northern Ireland in September 2001. Unless otherwise stated, 'Government' refers throughout to the United Kingdom (UK) Government and the devolved administrations for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, who are working in partnership. The policy on the management of radioactive waste is a responsibility of the devolved administrations.

2. This paper is a report on the responses to the consultation. It lists the organisations and people who commented on the proposals contained in the paper and provides a factual summary of the points that have been made. The outcome of this consultation will inform Government decisions on the next steps in the process designed to deliver radioactive waste management solutions in the UK. These will now be set out in a series of announcements and responses to UK Parliamentary Select Committees, starting on 24 July 2002. Annex 1 to this paper outlines our main announcement on 29 July 2002.
