Presented by the Scottish Executive in association withThe Royal Town Planning Institute in Scotland

This document is also available in pdf format (268k)

Nominations for this year's awards are invited in three categories:

outstanding performance and quality in development control

or an aspect of the service.

outstanding performance and quality in development plans

or an aspect of plan making practice. The judges will differentiate between work directly associated with statutory development plans and other planning related quality initiatives (for example on biodiversity action or land management). Both types of work will be
    eligible for award.

outstanding quality in development on the ground

which is significantly attributable to the planning service. This may include a wide variety of outcomes, for example outstanding results of regeneration work or co-ordinated improvements in public spaces.

Outstanding work by or within planning authorities will be the prime target of these awards, though work by other bodies such as consultants, community organisations or national agencies has not been excluded from nomination. Awards are recommended at the discretion of three independent judges subject to nominations of a suitable standard in each category, and the judges may choose an overall winner from across all three categories if they wish.

Along with evidence of outstanding quality, judges in previous years have looked for appreciation of sustainable development issues, community and user involvement, consumer testing, a significant contribution by the planning service, innovation, wider benefits, and difficult issues tackled and resolved. They would like to encourage more authorities to nominate their mainstream work in development planning and control. And in the development on the ground category, planners and housebuilders have been challenged to bring forward more good examples of new residential development in Scotland. Details of previous nominations and judges' assessments can be found on the internet in the Awards Section of the Executives Planning home page: www.scotland.gov.uk/planning/award. There will also be an opportunity on the website to submit suggestions and comments on this year's nominations.

Nominations giving reasons why an award should be considered under one of the categories should be sent on no more than two A4 sides to Scottish Awards for Quality in Planning, RTPI in Scotland, 57 Melville Street, Edinburgh EH3 7HL by 27 September 2002. Two photographic illustrations are required, and a further three may be included. The quality of initial submissions will be an important factor in the preliminary consideration of nominations. Nominations may be by nominees or others. Fax entries are not eligible. Judges may require follow-up presentations or visits to assess the nominations for award and will declare a shortlist. The Minister will present the awards on 27 February 2003. The judges' report for the 2001 awards is available from the Scottish Executive.
