Lockerbie creamery

06/09/2010

Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment Richard Lochhead today visited Milk Link's Lockerbie Creamery, the largest dairy processing business in Scotland.

Visiting the creamery during Scottish Food and Drink Fortnight, Mr Lochhead said:

"The dairy sector is of substantial importance to Scotland's economy and the Scottish Government is committed to supporting this industry. Generating more than #580 million of sales, Scotland's dairy sector employs more than 4,500 people on farms, with a further 2,800 in manufacturing and processing.

"While farm gate milk returns have risen in recent months, the sector still faces the challenge of rising input costs and discount retail prices. When visiting the Lockerbie Creamery I had the opportunity to see for myself the hard work that large dairy businesses are undertaking and witnessed first hand the high quality Scottish cheeses being made here. "I am always keen to engage with all parts of the supply chain as we work towards ensuring a viable future for the dairy industry in Scotland."

Will Sanderson, Milk Link Corporate Affairs Director commented:

"We were delighted to welcome the Cabinet Secretary to our Lockerbie Creamery which is the largest dairy processing facility in Scotland. During the visit we were able to show him the results of some of our recent investment at the creamery and also gave him the opportunity to undertake a grading of our range of award winning cheeses.

"At the same time, the visit provided us with an opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities confronting all in the Scottish dairy industry and Milk Link's focus on playing a lead role in securing a sustainable future for it. This was a constructive debate and we look forward to continuing to engage with Mr Lochhead and the Scottish Government on these important issues."
