Fire and Rescue Services 2009-10

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published Fire and Rescue Services Statistics providing information on workforce, equality and diversity and information on non-domestic fire safety for Scotland's Fire and Rescue Services.

Key findings are:

Workforce

  • On March 31, 2010, the headcount of Fire and Rescue Services staff in Scotland was 9,252 of which 13 per cent are female
  • For Scotland's Fire and Rescue Services 0.6 per cent of staff are recorded as belonging to a minority ethnic group
  • Overall 0.6 per cent of Scotland's Fire and Rescue Services staff have a disability

Non-Domestic Fire Safety

  • In 2009-10, Scotland's Fire and Rescue Services completed 7,712 fire safety audits. This represents 5 per cent of known non-domestic premises in Scotland and this took 29,800 hours
  • Of the 7,712 fire safety audits that were completed in 2009-10, 64 per cent were found to have reached compliant standards after the initial inspection
  • There were 76 enforcement notices, 21 prohibition notices and two alterations notices issued in 2009-10 by Scotland's Fire and Rescue Services
  • In 2009-10, there were two prosecutions completed, both of which found in favour of the Fire and Rescue Services
