Main transport trends 2010

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published Main Transport Trends, summarising a range of transport statistics.

Main Findings:

  • 67 per cent of journeys to work were made by car, 16 per cent by public transport and 15 per cent by active travel
  • New car registrations increased by 0.5 per cent to 216,000 in 2009 with the total number of vehicles on the road increasing by 0.7 per cent to 2.71 million
  • The volume of traffic decreased by 0.6 per cent in 2009 to 44.2 billion vehicle kilometres
  • ScotRail patronage increased by 0.7 per cent (to 76.93 million) in 2009/10, an increase of 20 per cent since 2004/05
  • Bus patronage fell by 0.8 per cent (to 493 million) in 2008/09, an increase of 6.9 per cent on 2004/05
  • Ferry patronage increased in 2009 - including a 4 per cent increase in passengers and a 5 per cent increase in vehicles
  • Air passenger numbers fell in 2009 - down 8 per cent to 22.5million
