Scottish Education Awards

18/06/2010

Eleven schools and four individuals have been recognised for their innovative work and outstanding achievements at the 2010 Scottish Education Awards.

The winners were selected from a pool of more than 650 nominations, coming from every part of the country with awards given across a diverse range of categories - including health, sport, literacy and numeracy, enterprise, sustainability, citizenship and technology.

They were announced at an awards ceremony in Glasgow, attended by more than 500 pupils, teachers, parents and others.

Education Secretary Michael Russell said:

"The reality of Scottish education is that we have hundreds of thousands of good pupils, taught by tens of thousands of excellent teachers within thousands of great schools.

"The Scottish Education Awards gives us a chance to put the spotlight on some of this good work - so often unheralded - that is taking place in schools right across the country.

"As I regularly meet with teachers, pupils and parents I am always struck by the enthusiasm young people have for learning, which is a testament to the support of their teachers. Education that is enjoyable, relevant and applicable to modern life is at the heart of our approach through Curriculum for Excellence.

"I believe that as Curriculum for Excellence is further embedded in our system, this positive ethos will foster more innovation and more excellence in our schools - just like the winners and finalists of the 2010 Scottish Education Awards."
