Lanarkshire bus crash
31/03/2010
First Minister Alex Salmond expressed his condolences on behalf of the Scottish Government following the fatal bus crash in Biggar.
The First Minister said:
"Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this terrible incident, including all the staff and students of Lanark Grammar School. My heart goes out in particular to the relatives and friends of the girl who so tragically lost her life and those who have suffered injury.
"On behalf of the Scottish Government, I pay tribute to the emergency service staff who work so hard on our behalf in often extremely adverse conditions, and do everything they can to preserve life, and the motorists and volunteers from the local community who did all they could to help. The priority is clearly dealing with the immediate situation, while whatever inquiries may be necessary will of course take place."
Education Secretary Michael Russell has been in contact with the Director of Education at South Lanarkshire Council following the crash.
Mr Russell said:
"My sympathy and thoughts are with all the pupils and staff at Lanark Grammar School, particularly those involved in the incident itself and their family and friends.
"This must be a deeply distressing time for all of those involved. I have spoken with the Director of Education this morning and we will continue to remain in contact and stand ready to offer any help we can."
The Scottish Government Resilience Room (SGoRR) was activated on Tuesday to respond to the current weather situation and is in contact with the 8 Strategic Co-ordinating Groups (SCGs) and other responder authorities across Scotland to gather information and help co-ordinate action if required.
