Need for unity on curriculum

10/02/2010

The need for unity on the Curriculum for Excellence and an end to petty squabbling to help make sure it delivers for pupils was underlined by Education Secretary Michael Russell this morning.

Mr Russell also backed teachers ability to deliver the real changes needed and the higher standards required in Scottish classrooms, as he gave evidence to the Parliament's Education Committee.

Education Secretary Michael Russell said:

"Giving pupils the skills they need for learning, life and work and giving our teachers the flexibility to really deliver the best for their pupils are at the heart of Curriculum for Excellence.

"I believe we need to end the cheap point scoring about Curriculum for excellence which originally arose out of a cross party concern for the future of education.

"We need to focus on how we can all work together to drive this forward and improve Scottish education. Politicians must support teachers as they drive up standards in our classrooms.

"Parents and pupils will expect us to do that. I am firmly committed to this and I am giving a guarantee today that I will work with others across party divides to make this a reality.

"Curriculum for Excellence is an important change for Scottish education and it is a change that I am determined to drive through."

Mr Russell today gave evidence to the Education and Lifelong Learning Committee today around the Curriculum for Excellence and the Assessment Framework.
