Farm income estimates
28/01/2010
Commenting on the 2009 Scottish Farm Income Estimates, Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said:
"As always, these statistics offer a mixed picture and are a classic example of the old saying 'up horn, down corn'. The overall drop in income is primarily accounted for by the large drop in cereal prices. In contrast, livestock, the largest and most valuable part of the farming industry, rose in value by £77 million.
"Our work to help farmers through these difficult economic times includes determined efforts to ensure they receive their support payments as quickly as possible. By the end of this month, Single Farm Payments worth over £500 million will have been paid to 98 per cent of farmers and LFASS payments worth around £34 million will have been paid to more than a half of eligible recipients.
"Farming helps underpin the rural economy and supports our rural communities, which is why we are working hand in hand with the industry to ensure it enjoys a sustainable and profitable future."
