Scottish nature to take centre stage in 2010

13/01/2010

Scots are being encouraged to celebrate Scotland's unique ecosystems - home to 90,000 different species - during the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB).

The United Nations-led celebration aims to involve individuals and organisations in activities to enjoy and safeguard our flora and fauna.

Launching Scotland's year-long involvement at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Environment Minister Roseanna Cunningham said:

"Protecting our natural environment makes ecological and financial sense. We are surrounded by wonderful examples of nature, from our back gardens to our stunning National Parks, and it is worth remembering that the natural environment is worth over £17 billion to the Scottish economy and supports over 240,000 jobs.

"We as humans are very much part of Scotland's ecosystems and need to recognise and celebrate this fact during the International Year of Biodiversity. By getting out and interacting with nature we will learn more about it and understand why it needs our help.

"Our natural environment is a living showcase that offers an enjoyable and educational experience for people of all ages. I hope everyone will take up the opportunity to discover more of it 2010."

Andrew Thin, Chairman of Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), said:

"I'd like to encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the wonderful nature in Scotland, and take the IYB pledge to 'do one thing' to help biodiversity. Perhaps take part in a wildlife survey, make your garden more bee-friendly, plant a window box or - here's an easy one - don't mow your lawn to help wildlife thrive!"

Professor Stephen Blackmore, the Botanics' Regius Keeper said:

"The International Year of Biodiversity is something for everyone because we humans are part of the interconnected web of life on earth. That's why we are celebrating with an exciting programme of events and activities at the Botanics."

In Scotland, SNH are leading on a range of measures to promote biodiversity conservation throughout the year. Individual actions being encouraged are:

  • Experiencing nature on the doorstep
  • Gardening for life
  • Helping with a wildlife survey
  • Telling someone else about the celebration
  • Buying seasonal food
