Whisky exports resilient

08/12/2009

Commenting on the latest Scotch Whisky export figures which show that exports have been resilient during the economic downturn, Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said:

"This is another impressive performance from the Scotch Whisky industry and I congratulate everyone involved for generating such high sales during a global recession.

"It's greatly encouraging that the sector is continuing to punch above its weight on the international stage. Our national food and drink policy was developed with input from the Scotch Whisky Association and I look forward to continuing to work with the drinks industry to maximise its contribution to sustainable economic growth in Scotland and strengthening our reputation as a land of food and drink.

"We are determined to help build on these impressive export figures. New regulations recently came into force that give our iconic Scotch Whisky greater protection against cheap imitations and we are working through our enterprise agencies across the world to realise the massive economic potential of the industry."
