H1N1 death

25/11/2009

An adult from the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board area has died after contracting H1N1, Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon confirmed.

The patient had an underlying health condition.

This death brings the total number of H1N1 related deaths in Scotland to 41.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said:

"I send my condolences to the patient's loved ones at this tragic time.

"Fortunately it is a mild illness for most, but people with underlying health conditions are at greater risk of complications.

"We are vaccinating people within the priority groups as soon as vaccines arrive in the country. We now have over 70 percent of all the supplies we need to vaccinate the priority groups, and that total is increasing on a weekly basis. We remain firmly on track to have offered the vaccine to everybody in the first phase of the priority groups by Christmas. "

If you are concerned about flu-like symptoms contact your GP for advice or call NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24.

Further information on the vaccine programme is available via the Scottish Swine Flu Vaccination Helpline on 08000 28 28 16.

To protect patient confidentiality reports will only contain the following information in any H1N1 death:

  • Whether the patient was a child, elderly person or adult
  • Which health board area they were a patient of
  • The presence of underlying health conditions or pregnancy
