H1N1 death
16/11/2009
A child from the NHS Ayrshire and Arran board area has died after contracting H1N1, Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon confirmed today.
The youngster had an underlying health condition.
This death brings the total number of H1N1 related deaths in Scotland to 38.
Ms Sturgeon said:
"It is with regret I can confirm the death of another youngster. This is a tragic loss for the child's family and my thoughts are with them at this devastating time.
"While we have seen increasing number of deaths in recent weeks, I would like to reassure people that there is no more cause for alarm. The virus is not becoming more virulent, but as more people are contracting the virus we will see an increase in the number of people who experience complications.
"Fortunately it is a mild illness for most, but people with underlying health conditions are at greater risk of complications which is why they are a priority for vaccination.
"People within the priority groups are currently being invited on a rolling basis, by their GP, to take up the vaccine."
If you are concerned about flu-like symptoms contact your GP for advice or call NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24.
