20/10/2009

A 59 year old woman from Fife who had been suffering from H1N1 has died. The patient had significant underlying health conditions.

At the request of her family, no further details will be released.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said:

"I'm deeply saddened to hear of this death and my thoughts are with her family and friends.

"In the vast majority of H1N1 cases most people have fairly mild symptoms, but if you are at greater risk I urge you to take up the vaccine when invited to do so by your GP.

"The first phase of the vaccine programme will launch tomorrow and we are confident those in the priority groups will be vaccinated by Christmas.

"Anyone who is concerned about flu-like symptoms should continue to contact their GP for advice, or NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24."
